I Passed the Devil’s Pickup Truck

Way back in the mists of time, in 2005, one of my friends sent out a general query to his friends’ list asking if someone could write him a song or poem about an encounter he’d just had. Namely, he was driving on I-31 and passed a blue pickup truck with “666” on the license plate. Clearly, it belonged to the devil. So I obliged him with this little song. It’s an original melody and I promise that one day I’ll figure out how to upload a recording.

I Passed the Devil’s Pickup Truck Out On Highway 31
by Julie Golick, “The Pocket Bard”
August 2005

I was driving down the highway in the middle of the day
When I came up to a pickup truck and its tail-lights blocked my way,
Well, it was big, and it was blue, and it must have weighed a ton,
And I passed the devil’s pickup truck out on Highway 31!

Well, I came up right behind it, and I saw to my surprise,
Three numbers painted on the license plate, right there before my eyes,
Well, six-six-six the numbers read and they shimmered in the sun,
When I passed the devil’s pickup truck out on Highway 31!

Well, you wouldn’t have expected it, it was blue instead of red,
With a tackle box hanging out the back and it rattled as he sped,
He didn’t have no pitchfork and no roofrack for his gun,
But I’m sure I passed devil’s pickup truck out on Highway 31!

Well, I drove up right beside it, and I saw the man inside,
He looked just like a normal guy with glasses on his eyes,
But I wasn’t fooled so easily, no I knew what I had done:
Well, I passed the devil’s pickup truck out on Highway 31!
Yes, I passed the devil’s pickup truck out on Highway 31!
