It Could Happen to You, SCA Version

Pennsic 36 (2007) was a particularly rainy War. It rained almost every day of War Week. There were thunderstorms aplenty. Roads turned into mud-puddles, cars were mired, and I think one battle was even called off on account of Mother Nature. When I got home, I decided the Rains of Pennsic 36 deserved their own song, so I wrote it.

It Could Happen to You, SCA Version
aka: The Rains of Pennsic 36

To the tune of: “It Could Happen To You,” by Blue Rodeo
by Katherine Ashewode, “The Pocket Bard”
August 2007

They rolled in the wagons and they pitched the tents,
Got into garb and greeted their friends,
Strapped on armour and marched to the battlefield.
They started to fight when the lightening clapped,
All the warriors came runnin’ on back,
Rain struck down on the tops of their helmets and shields.

Oh that Pennsic War,
It rained like it had never before,
You can keep your tent and your armour dry,
Cook up a meal if you really try,
But still the rain from the sky will keep on falling.

So they battened the hatches as the rain came down,
Rustin’ their swords and tarnishin’ crowns,
Feast gear floating through camp on an open stream,
We lost a pavilion as it blew away,
Babies up cryin’ all night and day,
So much rain that I hoped it was only a dream!

Oh the battle’s stopped,
Seems the war points all been dropped,
‘Cause there’s no place left for the warrior’s fight,
Not for the squires and not for knights,
And you’ll be sorry when lightening strikes your sword!

It could happen to you,
It could happen to you,
It could happen to you
Some year when you least expect it
Lightening strikes like you never suspected,
All your garb’s soaked through,
It could happen to you.

(musical break)

So you pack up your tents in the pouring rain,
Load them into your carts again,
Hope your wheels get free from the sticking mud.

Oh at Pennsic War,
It rained like it had never before,
You can keep your tent and your armour dry,
Put your chair on a mountain high,
Curse and groan like you’re wantin’ to die,
But still that rain from the sky will keep on falling!

Oh, it could happen to you… (x4)
