Marian Doesn’t Like Wool

At Pennsic XLI (2012), I was honored to be taken as Marian of Heatherdale’s apprentice. One thing that some people don’t realize is that Marian is very allergic to wool, and she’d asked me if I could write her a catchy little song as a reminder. This is what I came up with. Because it’s an original tune, it’ll probably be up on my YouTube page one day. For the musicians in the audience, the chord structure is A, A, D, E throughout.

Marian Doesn’t Like Wool

What do you do when you’re out in the town
And a cheerful lady starts wavin’ you down
Check your cloak and check your gown
Check the lining under your crown
You want to see a smile instead of a frown
‘Cause Marian, Marian, Marian doesn’t like wool

What do you do at a party at night
When a cheerful lady comes into your sight
Check to the left and check to the right
Check from your toes to the top of your height
You want to see her happy and not in a fright
‘Cause Marian, Marian, Marian doesn’t like wool

What do you do when you’re singing a song
And a cheerful lady is singing along
You don’t need to stop for the sound of a gong
It just takes a minute, it’s not very long
For you to be sure that you’re not in the wrong
‘Cause Marian, Marian, Marian doesn’t like wool
No Marian, Marian, Marian doesn’t like wool
